Photography is more than just capturing what is in front of the lens it is about telling a story, sparking emotions, and creating visuals that make people think deeper. For this fine art portrait on mental health, I wanted to explore the contrast between how we appear to others and how we sometimes feel inside. The mirror became the perfect metaphor.
The idea started with the question: What if the reflection in the mirror didn’t match the expression of the person holding it? We often put on a brave face for the world, yet the reflection we carry inside can be completely different. This duality inspired the portrait, representing the silent battles many people go through.
To create this effect, I didn’t rely on photo manipulation of a single shot. Instead, I carefully photographed two different images:
Image One – The subject looking into the mirror with a serious, almost somber expression.
Image Two – The same subject smiling naturally, holding the mirror as if it were reflecting back her emotions.
Lighting was kept dramatic and simple, using black and white tones to strip away distractions and focus entirely on emotion and expression. A single light source was used to sculpt the face, add depth, and create a timeless mood that complements the theme of inner reflection.
In editing, I combined the two photographs into one seamless composition. The smiling subject holds the frame, but the mirror reveals a different side of her—serious, quiet, and contemplative. By merging both shots, the final image challenges viewers to think about the disconnect between external appearances and internal struggles.
This image symbolizes how mental health is often invisible. Someone may look happy and vibrant on the outside, yet their reflection tells a different story. It’s a reminder that what we see on the surface doesn’t always reflect what people are truly going through.
